I think it's fixed. Turns out you have to delete the preferences. (Which took me forever to find.) In Vista you need to go to
C:\Users\[yourname]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences
Change the name of the LIGHTROOM 2 PREFERENCES.AGPREFS file. Then when you reopen Lightroom it creates a new preferences file. You do lose your catalog but the data in your files is still there. So when you reimport the files they are OK.
Hopefully now I can report on the benefits of the tool.
